European Parliament members express concern over crackdown on activists in India
The Wire.in reports that 20 members of the European Parliament have written to union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad (law and justice), Jual Oram (tribal affairs) and Thawarchand Gehlot (social justice and empowerment. A copy was also marked to an official of the NHRC.
The harassment of students, activists, human rights defenders, academics and others in India has raised a lot of eyebrows across the world. This includes the 2018 coordinated arrests of Nagpur University professor Soma Sen, activist Anand Teltumbde, lawyer Surendra Gadling, trade unionist Sudha Bharadwaj and others—all of whom are known for their work in defending human rights.
The parliamentarians have also noted the harassment of Amnesty International India but there is no mention of the international environmental NGO, Greenpeace, which recently shut down its office in India without much of a mention in the media.
