Indian Express reporter assaulted during riots
A reporter with the Indian Express in New Delhi recounts how he was prevented from reporting and was assaulted, spared a worse beating because the mob identified him as a Hindu on Tuesday in New Delhi.
The reporter was in north-east Delhi following communal violence that erupted in the capital of India.
The reporter, Shivnarayan Rajpurohit, was accosted by two separate groups. The first deleted photos from his phone and threw his notebook into a shop which was already on fire.
The second mob beat him on the legs till he handed them his phone and sent him scurrying away with the grim warning, Hindu ho, bach gaye (you have been spared because you are a Hindu) and also asked him to chant Jai Sree Ram, which the rioters are using as a war cry.
The mob identified him as a Hindu by checking his press card. That they spared him a thrashing because he was a Hindu proves that the mob comprised Hindus.
