Indian journalist wins press freedom award
Indian journalist Neha Dixit is one of the recipients of the 2019 World Press Freedom award for her work, which has earned her pressure and rebuke from the Indian government.
She has produced in-depth reportage on several burning issues such as the Muzaffarnagr riots, an investigation into allegations of baby-snatching by right wing fanatics in India and encounter killings by the police in Uttar Pradesh. All of these stories have led to intense social media criticism, rape and death threats and criminal cases registered against her for two of them. She says that senior police officers have threatened her on the phone for exposing the brazen encounters.
Dixit has won the award with several other journalists who have been reporting from oppressive regimes.
