Noida police heckles ToI journalist
The senior most police officer of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vaibhav Krishna, has been accused of heckling and harassing journalists for questioning him on an alleged sex chat that was leaked in the public domain. This development took place while the Uttar Pradesh police (of which the Noida force is a part) is already under severe public criticism for its high-handedness, arbitrary arrests and alleged brutality in dealing with protests against the contentious and controversial citizenship
The police officer has claimed that the videos of the sex chats, allegedly between himself and a woman, are morphed.
A video was circulated on social media which purportedly shows the police officer engaged in a sex chat over a video call with a woman. A third phone was used to record the video of the alleged sex chat between the two.
After the video went viral on social media channels, the Noida SSP was forced to hold a press conference, where he called the video fake and threatened to take action against those who shared it with others. A part of the alleged video conversation briefly touches on corruption in postings of government officers, which the Noida SSP said was behind the morphing of the video because he had reported the corruption probe. At the time of filing of this report, the scandal is still developing and the Noida SSP has claimed that there is an extortion ring involved, which includes some self-professed journalists who work for unknown portals. Three of four such alleged racketeers were arrested a few months ago.
However, when a Meerut-based reporter of the Times of India, Piyush Rai, sent queries to the SSP regarding the video, he was met with hostilities. A team of the Noida police, in plainclothes, went over to Meerut and accosted the reporter outside the office of the Meerut SSPs office, threatening to detain him till the reporter pointed out that there was CCTV surveillance in the area. The Hindu reports that the IG of Meerut Zone, which administers Noidas police force as well has asked for an explanation from the Noida SSP for harassing the journalist.
