Whatsapp Rumours Are Incitement to Violence and Not Fake News
Rumours circulated on social media–mobile phone app Whatsapp being the most popularly used–should be treated as incitement-to-violence and not classified as 'fake news'.
An article on the Economic & Political Weekly explains why this distinction is necessary. It also argues that Whatsapp's role may be exaggerated yet the there is pressure from the Indian government on Whatsapp which has re-designed some of its features. This may not be useful, the piece argues, since there are instances on lynchings even without rumours on social media. Yet, there may be instances of Whatsapp sharing meta data of the app's users.
